To thwart the rats and crows I ordered a new enclosed compost bin that sits directly on the soil.  We will put egg shells and all cooked food in the new bin, put the lid tightly on top and see if our extra vigilance keeps away unwanted visitors. Our homemade bin is completely open to any scavengers.
