We knew that the septic tank would have to be replaced and we needed to plan for a time when we hope to have extra accommodation in the triple garage and the barns – so we went for a large septic tank. But we didn’t know that it would be the size of a small submarine!
I was glad that I wasn’t there on the day it arrived. I would have “freaked out” when I saw the monster, the digger, the lorry and the hole that had to be dug so near to the apple tree. And the apple tree, sadly, was the first casualty. It was already leaning at a precarious angle but as the digger dug it collapsed onto its side. Pity.
Then another horror – as they were digging, the digger managed to sever a field drain and water was gushing everywhere. So two steps forward and three steps back.
The tank is now cemented in place but what is to be done about the leaking pipe? Perhaps we can divert the drain into a new pond that the digger can dig with an overflow into the ditch in the hedge. Or send a pipe from the break to a deep dug hole filled with pea shale with an overflow pipe into our existing pond.
Whenever I see the digger coming I see pounds flying out of our bank balance!
There is no going bank as the monster septic tank is fixed in place with cement. So a solution to the field drain must be found.
What this space.
