The King of the Cat Barn

Twenty years ago our son bought us an overpriced sheepskin from a furniture emporium in Hampstead. A lovely gift but the sheepskin got worn and a bit grubby and we couldn’t throw it out. We brought it with us to The Gables and it found its way into a cardboard box in the cat barn. Nigel has commandeered the rug and box and spends many hours in regal repose on his very own sheepskin rug.

I heard Perky calling at 4 am and, in the dark, saw her patrolling

the field with just one lamb in tow. As I went out early this morning I heard the second lamb bleating. He had got caught up in the hay feeder. He’s an adventurer like Nigel

I managed to untangle him and he ran straight to his mum for a comforting feed.

Just before we went out this morning Little Miss Pretty gave birth to triplets. Last year she had a still birth so well done LMP. Sadly one of the triplets was lifeless by the time we saw them but the other two are cosy inside now with their mother.

The one that didn’t make it

Since that excitement )tinged with sadness) I have been cleaning out one of the large dog cages (we don’t have dogs but they are ideal for lambs) which the two grey hens had colonised. It needed a lot of cleaning. We will bring this into the kitchen for the rejected lamb but might try to reintroduce her to mum Cieste later this morning. The lamb, called Schluf, is doing really well and has drunk warm goat milk this morning

Oh no – there’s a lamb in the kitchen!

Cieste has form. She doesn’t like twins. In the past, she had rejected one of her twins and attacked it. She started doing that tonight with the girl lamb. I made up a bottle of colostrum which the lamb downed so quickly – she must have been starving. I watched Cieste try to butt her so we brought her into the kitchen in a makeshift box. We will find a large cage for her tomorrow and see how we all get on! Plenty of goat milk here for lambs.

Pickling Monday!

Daughter took home Gables beetroots yesterday and she bought some small cucumbers from a local Polish shop near where she lives. Tonight she impressed us with this photo

She then mentioned that she was going to try pickling carrots.

I had bought a “wonky” 1 kg bag of carrots from Sainsbury, Biggleswade, on the way home from London this afternoon – they only cost 30p. Inspired by daughter I found a recipe on the internet, filled two jars with the ingredients and will taste them tomorrow.
