My least favourite (and most painful) job at The Gables

Is picking gooseberries.  The bushes are full of lethal spikes that attack fingers and any other part of the body that is not armour plated.  I picked a fraction of the fruit and this box yielded 9 lb in weight that I topped and tailed and froze in bags to be used at a later date – if I have any digits remaining!  My task this week is to pick some of the gooseberries each day and to get the asparagus bed well weeded.  And all around me I see soft fruits ripening – loganberries, blackcurrants, strawberries and even some raspberries.  Time for jam making and bottling.

And we moved ducks and duckling and chicks to new, larger runs today.  They are getting used to their new homes.

  1. I saw your photo and said ‘Lovely. Goosegogs’. We always called them that but I began to wonder if we were the only ones. Put goosegogs into a search engine and it is amazing what comes up.
