The Silkie is lying over her eggs and is so still that it might seem as though she is dead.  Both she and the broody duck have gone into a trance-like state and they hardly eat or drink or move while they sit incubating their eggs.  What goes through their brains or do they, too, go into a state of suspended animation?  They certainly seem to be at peace.
