What has five toes and not four, pink and white feathers (females) or black,grey and white (males)? Yes it’s Salmon Faverolles ….an old breed of poultry from France developed in the 1860’s and named after one of the villages, Faverolle, where they were bred.

We now have two of these special hens and a cockerel who sleep in one henhouse whilst the other four birds sleep opposite. By day they all scratch around in the orchard, lay beautiful light brown eggs and shade themselves from the midday sun under their nesting boxes.
Chris has increased the security around the top of the inner run so that it has, dare I say, something of the look of a prison fence. Well, if it prevents foxes I can live with the aesthetics.
