We learnt our lesson 36 years ago in Devon, when a fox got a number of our chickens as they were happily pecking away in the field outside the hen house. So we are putting chicken wire under the soil around the chicken house and under and around the run. Foxes are not welcome here.
There is still a lot more work to do but the beautiful weather and the extra daylight hour has given us plenty of time for building, also for weeding the rhubarb ( I have been given three sticks to stew tonight!). Jeremy has put some hanging platforms in the poly tunnel and I have tidied up the flowers outside the front door and done some weeding of the paths. The chorus of assorted birdsong has accompanied us all day and the chaffinches and robins are particularly bold and fearless even when I came out of the back door bearing a tea tray for our midday break.

I could sit and watch the hawks all day as they hover above the field….but I have yet to see one catch any prey.

Gillian, Your blog inspired me to get out in the garden this morning. I removed half the soil from the raised bed, deep dug the remainder then dug in compost and returned the top soil. Have planted onions and some perpetual lettuce plants under a cloche. I hope the Bearwood cats will find some other public convenience this year!
Good for you
Its really Jeremy who plans the gardening and I am his willing amuensis and nochschlepper(?)
But i do appreciate the daily supply of salads from the polytunnel and, in due course, the raised beds
Happy gardening
