If you need someone to feed and walk your dogs or take care of your cats and horses and any other of your beloved pets then Sam’s your woman. She’s brilliant with animals snd (if I ever go away – which I doubt) I’d even trust her to milk the goat!

And another piece of shameless advertising for brother Michael. I wish I lived nearer to him or he performed around here. I might try to get him some local gigs.

A knock on the door

From a villager (and her lovely lurcher dog) who thought my chickens might have escaped. They hadn’t. It’s my neighbours chooks who go walk about across the road.

By strange coincidence my new acquaintance had been researching her family tree

And when I mentioned that we had lived in Devon over 40 years ago she asked if I knew the Quickes. I knew their dairy and their farm shop just outside the village of Newton St Cyrs which I passed on my way home from working in Exeter. She had discovered a connection in her grandparents family. I told her that they made fantastic butter, cheese and ice cream and a friend of ours used to work in the dairy and serve in the shop. It’s always good to meet new village neighbours and share histories and connections.

As I continue the autumn tidy up in the garden I’m listening to the news on BBC Radio 4………

I learn of the death of the last white president of South Africa, F W de Klerk who received the Nobel prize alongside Nelson Mandela for overseeing the peaceful dismantling of the apartheid system. My son reminded me that at a conference in Vienna in 2015 he met de Klerk

The conference was called “Ukraine Tomorrow” – not quite sure what son or de Klerk contributed. Best not to ask!

Insensitive signage – lock them up!

Now that the weather is changing the tai chi classes are moving indoors to The Jubilee Hall in Eaton Socon.

Probably a good idea to go inside as we got soaked last week when the rain fell on us at the Riverside Park
Sadly, it wasn’t difficult to find the hall. This ridiculous sign has been attached to this historic building
It’s called the Eaton Socon Cage and was built in 1826 to restrain local “malefactors”.

The Cage was used until the late 19th century, latterly for incarcerating a drunkard. Then it fell into disrepair and the building was restored in 1983 by the local council. To my eye it is insensitive and out of place to stick a sign on this historic building pointing the way to the Jubilee Hall. It looks absurd!

Too much food for the goats

As we continue the autumn “tidy up” there are wheelbarrows full of bean plants and squash plants. We will have to ration the helpings or risk bloated goats!

In the duck house the “gang of four” got indoors before Lucy the goose and her companion Lola. They ate their supper before the goose went inside and pushed them out of the way. She’s a hungry goose.

The copper beech hedge is showing its best colours
The lime tree leaves have turned pale yellow

The sun set on another beautiful day

And mum was on good form this morning. We had laughs, gossip and farewell kisses. Lovely
