Suddenly it’s all about pickling (and butterflies)

A glut of courgettes yesterday so why not make a sort of piccalilli with courgettes and shallots?

And as the cherry tomatoes ripen outside and in the greenhouse….
A sweet and sour jar of picked tomatoes
Greengages picked this morning, washed and scored
Packed into a kilner jar and rough salt added
Topped with boiled water and then (as with the tomatoes) into the fridge for a week. I wonder if I’ll like the taste?
Outside Large White butterflies (aka cabbage whites) flit from flower to flower

One very happy human – two reasons

Jeremy just brought me in a dahlia

It’s on the kitchen windowsill above the sink and will give me daily dahlia pleasure until it fades

The second is a gift from my son-in-law

For over 15 years (I think) Twiglets were not on the “kosher” list of foods allowed to be eaten by observant Jews. It may have been because the factory where they were made or the conveyer belt where they were produced was using animal fats. Recent factory inspections have satisfied the kosher food board that this is no longer the case and one of my favourite UPF (ultra processed foods) is available for me to snack on to my heart’s content. It might be bad for my body but Twiglets are a vice that I do not want to give up ever again!

Two weeks old and growing rapidly

This morning I cleaned out Ducky’s cage

I put him/her in a box whilst I changed the straw and washed out the food snd water bowls

Then it was back into a clean, dry cage with fresh straw. Ducky will need the heat plate for another few weeks so I will have a kitchen companion until September

Ducklings grow fast and so do children

A friend called in with his granddaughter this morning. I hadn’t seen her since she started high school and suddenly she’s a young woman and learning to drive! Being a teenager she didn’t want her photo on the blog but I snapped her grandad instead.

Baby duckling will be two weeks old on Sunday. I hope it will become used to human contact
We sent our friend away with a jar of honey and I gave his granddaughter some jam for her parents

New recipes for fresh produce

The plums are beginning to ripen outside and I looked for an Umeboshi recipe (Japanese style pickled plums). If all goes to plan the pickled plums (pickled in sea salt) will be ready to taste in about a fortnight.

The green pate is made with courgettes, onions and garlic with some ground almonds and seasoning.

The sautéed celery should have been eaten last night but I forgot that I had made the dish so we will eat it tonight.

The tomatoes are beginning to ripen both inside the greenhouse and outside in the large pots at the back of the house

The goats object

Have you heard the new word being used? It’s “goat” meaning greatest of all time. I heard it on the radio this morning and then this evening when the amazing Simone Biles won a gold medal at the Olympic Games

Look what her coach gave her when the gold was announced.
Yes – a goat necklace. Click below
