When we lived in Devon 45 years ago the annual village show was a serious and hotly contested competition. This was a more relaxed affair but it might get more competitive next year.

World events intrude even at The Gables

What would I do without the peace and the animals that surround me? World news and family crises cannot be kept out when I switch on the radio or look at my iPhone. I came in from feeding the three lambs to find a WhatsApp message from our dear friend (who feels like part of our family) whose mother remains in Lviv. She tells me that Lviv is being bombarded by Russian air strikes.

It is a place of beauty and also of great sorrow for my tribe but a place where I have learnt so much. I pray for its people, its historic buildings and the beautiful synagogue that we helped to restore 17 years ago
