“Nature, red in tooth and claw” (from Tennyson’s 1850 poem In Memoriam A.H.H)

This morning a muntjac deer emerged from the hedge next to the duck run. It has a limp and has been seen here before and in our friend’s garden much further along the road.

Numerous adult and juvenile pheasants run across the garden all day long. The wild mallard and her solo duckling are still on the goose pond (which is at its lowest for all the years we have been here) and numerous small, wild birds are coming closer and closer to the house searching for food and water.
