I made a decision this morning

The four goslings dwarf their surrogate mother hen.

This morning I took mother hen back to her flock. She didn’t make a murmur or offer any resistance. It was time to leave her offspring

On the Wednesday walk one of our number has been absent since February. She is doing childcare for her first grandchild

This entails a two hour drive each way and three nights away from home. More and more the next generation relies on grandparents for childcare. Many of us are happy to do this but we have also had full working lives and hadn’t expected to bring up a second lot of babies. I’m grateful that mine come to visit me but rarely expect me to stand in overnight.

At least three of our ewes show definite signs of pregnancy. This will be a second pregnancy in the space of just a few months. I hope they give birth easily else it will be rubber gloves on again and call the midwife – us!
