An inspiration

The synagogue in Lviv where the Rebbetzin and her family made Passover for the community this week

For those of you who have read “Jews Milk Goats” you will have seen the chapter entitled from London to Lviv. My friendship and connection with the Rabbi and Rebbetzin Sara began 30 years ago. Whilst I have moved on to The Gables and enjoy a more peaceful lifestyle, the Rabbi and Sara continue to care for an impoverished community in a country that has been at war for over 2 years. In spite of the dangers and difficulties they ensure that no one goes hungry, that no one is lonely and that the festivals can be celebrated in the beautiful synagogue which was restored and rededicated in 2007. I was fortunate to take a plane full of people to Lviv on that remarkable day which was the most memorable and humbling and inspiring day of my life.

May the Rabbi and Sara and their family continue to have the strength and courage to care for the Lviv community and may they be able, one day, to visit The Gables where we can sit and reminisce and enjoy nature together. May that day come soon.

  1. Gill this takes me back to the days when we did the brochures. It was a lovely time for me and the story of these two devoted people in Lviv was so inspiring. How hard it must be for them now xx

  2. Thanks for posting this, Gill. I ,too, have visited the synagogue in Lviv, and have listened to Rabbi Bald give a talk to ancestors of Holocaust victims at a mass grave site near the village of Bolechow where my grandfather was born. His message of reconciliation and mutual respect to a mixed crowd of Jews and Ukrainian residents of Bolechow remains of the most moving memories of my 75 years on earth. My heart weeps for the Ukrainian people who are suffering the brutal attack by the thug Putin.
