Tragedy and triumph

All day Cieste sat away from the other sheep – a sign that she was in labour. This evening I went out with the torch and saw what looked like a lambs head sticking out of Cieste’s rear end. I went back to the house to get help and Jeremy and I both put on disposable gloves and returned to the sheep. The lambs legs (which should emerge before the head) were tucked up and I had to try and free them. I was able to pull the legs out snd then pulled out the rest of the lifeless lamb. Cieste was exhausted and lying on the ground. I thought she was a goner. I took the dead lamb back to put her in a closed container. Jeremy went back to check on Cieste who was now, miraculously, on her feet. Did she have another lamb inside her belly? We left her intending to give her some time and privacy to clean herself up. 45 minutes later we went outside to check on her. Amazingly she had given birth to a small lamb that was already on its feet and searching for the teat. Let’s hope mother and baby survive the night.
