I saved some pumpkin seeds from two of our squashes that we grew last year. I sowed them in pots and put them on the kitchen windowsill and watered them lovingly. Only one seedling emerged – much to my disappointment. I planted it in a raised bed and kept a close eye on it, surrounding it with organic slug pellets whilst it was a vulnerable baby plant and then watering it when the days were dry. This morning I admired it.

Well done. The two baby pumpkins I grew from last year’s seed and planted out – in pots standing in water to deter slugs – were both eaten by the blighters!
