The tale of the missing chicken

For five weeks the little grey hen sat on two goose eggs. They didn’t hatch and into the sixth week J took her off the eggs and put her back with the paddock flock.

Grey hen stopped at the kitchen door en route to the paddock

The goats, in the paddock, had repeatedly damaged the netting around the chicken run as they tried to nibble at the bark of the tree just out of reach. We had found the chickens “outside” a couple of times including the day that the grey hen returned to the paddock run. Although we fixed the fencing the grey hen had disappeared. How sad. But…….this morning she came out from under the chicken house to fetch some scattered corn. It seems as though she is making a nest on the ground and will continue to be broody until she hatches some eggs. I’m just glad that she wasn’t taken by a fox!
