Country roads can be treacherous

Mill Road is narrow and on either side of the two sharp bends are deep ditches. Today, on the way to St Neots along Bushmead Road, a policewoman was directing the traffic away from an accident site between a lorry and a car. On the way home, as I drove through The Cut on Mill Road, I was halted by two cars. One was stopped in the middle of the single lane and the other was sideways up in the ditch. Both drivers were shaken but unhurt.

I remember learning, on a speed awareness course (in lieu of points in my licence!), that accidents on country roads often cause more injury than in town. One reason is that no one knows you are there in an isolated stretch of road or in a ditch. So watch out on our twisty lanes and country byways. Btw if anyone knows where I have put my precious bunch of keys please let me know. I haven’t left The Gables for two days yet they have disappeared. Nigel, was it you?

  1. That bit along the top of the cutting is claiming about a vehicle a week at the moment. Think the problem is urban drivers using it as a cut-through to avoid the delays on the Bedford – Black Cat roundabout stretch of the A428/A1. Also small truck drivers in too much of a hurry. One tried to rush past me a fortnight or so ago and as I watched it slowly tipped sideways into the ditch. I am afraid I did not stop to help as the driver was an idiot!

Will be miles worse when the huge disruption starts when the Black Cat flyovers are being built! Masses more drivers will have their Satnavs bringing them along our lanes.

Hope your keys turn up before long. Sure they are in an obvious place somewhere, or at least mine lost items usually are in full view when I eventually find them. Or else the Wheatsheaf Farm family of Little Borrowers have gone to yours to wreak havoc!

Best wishes for a chaotic weekend.
