When is a tortoise NOT a tortoise

We sent some photos of Tiddles to the Tortoise Trust and the reply was that Tiddles is a Mauremys Leprosa turtle and NOT a tortoise!

So now we have to rethink Tiddles home and environment. Maybe he should live with the ducks or maybe with the goldfish. We shall look at this tomorrow in the daylight. Hmmmm.

  1. That is so interesting Gillian. And even more of a mystery is where he came from. Will you try to keep him or pass him on to a more suitable environment – like the lakes on the Golf Course! Possibly not as he would eat lots of baby fish etc.

I remember seeing big turtles living happily on the big pond in Bedford Park which had been released after the Ninja Turtle fad about 25 years ago. Were those ones the European Pond Turtle? Maybe he walked from Bedford?

  2. Well I never! Must admit I thought he looked a bit flat to be a tortoise, but thought he was just a type I’d not seen before. As Kate says above, I’d keep him away from your fish. A mystery how he got to you – how very interesting.
