Picking gooseberries is a dangerous job and my hands and arms bore the scars for weeks after the berry harvest. The reward was gooseberry jam, gooseberry sorbet and bags of topped and tailed gooseberries in the freezer. I am stewing some with apples today.
This afternoon Jeremy is pruning the gooseberry bushes. It’s not a pleasant task because of the thorny branches. Nigel is watching with interest.
