En route from Embankment Station to King Charles Street and the magnificent Foreign and Commonwealth Building, I passed New Scotland Yard. Outside at the entrance were two policemen so I called to them and asked them to direct me to The FCO in said street. They looked at each other with a look of utter bewilderment and suggested I might be walking in the wrong direction. I knew enough to know that I should be walking toward Parliament Square so I carried on regardless. Then I found another bobby on guard outside another fortified building. He hadn’t a clue to my destination either! Finally, just near Westminster Station I asked two random fellows, one of whom googled the street name and directled me accurately to the place. He was, I might add, an Eastern European and not a native of London Town. Bless him. I complained to the security guard at the FCO.

He told me that most of the central london duty coppers are drafted in from other areas and have no idea of the geography of the place. What a waste of time. It was all worth it In the end as I was there to attend an event organised by daughter to address the issues of peacekeeper abuse of children in war torn and third world countries where sadly children and women (and less often boys and men) have been raped and abused by those who are sent out to protect them and give them aid.A packed room, a fantastic panel of experts and a wonderful young British army officer with high principles and a caring heart.
Things are changing and will change.

When things change for the better your amazing daughter will have played a huge part! Very proud of her. Lotsof love xx

If things get better, we have to thank the Freedman family for playing their part. After reading The Guardian on Saturday I feel fairly pessimistic. A couple of years ago, trying to make my way from Liverpool St. station to Nordicana at the Old Truman Brewery in the East End, everyone I asked for directions either did not know or could not speak English. I think Londoners should take a revision course on the geography of their city every year: it is changing too quickly!
