“Pop up”…….succah

Just big enough for Jeremy, me and eagerly awaited grandson.  We will eat our meals in the succah (tabernacle) to commemorate the festival of Succot.  With a roof of leaves it will remind us of the years when the Children of Israel, newly  liberated from slavery in the time of the Pharaohs, wandered through the desert before they entered the Promised Land.  They dwelt in booths or succahs and their existence depended on the benevolence of their maker.  We look up through the leaves at night and view the moon and stars as our ancestors did in biblical times.  Succot is also a harvest festival when produce was brought to The Temple in Jerusalem once the people had settled in The Land.  All around us, in Bedfordshire, churches and their congregations are marking Harvest time with festive meals and with food collections for the poor and homeless.  We need to come out of our houses and sit under the sky to remind ourselves of our own fragility, the beauty of the firmament and our good fortune in having a home in which to dwell for the other 51 weeks of the year.  Enjoy!
