Yesterday we picked ripe sloes from the hedge in the paddock.  Today I washed and pricked them and put them into a large kilner jar to which I added sugar and a litre of gin.  The concoction will sit in a cupboard until midwinter and we have to remember to give it a shake regularly to dissolve the sugar.
