It’s not all “happy endings” at The Gables

This morning I looked into the paddock and saw the last pregnant sheep going into labour.  Sitting on the ground she had her nose pointing at the sky and she was pushing and pushing.  Then, after a while, I saw a form on the ground and the mother finally got up and began to lick the wet creature.  Nothing was moving.  The lamb wasn’t trying to get up.  After a while I  went close enough to see what was happening and discovered that there were two lambs – both lifeless –  a large lamb and a small.  Mother was occasionally licking the lifeless bodies and then walking away to nibble at the grass.  I have left the lambs where they are and have texted Farmer Rob for advice.  Meanwhile I gave Sweetie Pie and Poppet more bottles of milk and wondered whether it would be a good idea to try to “put them on” the bereft sheep.  I await a ruling from one with greater experience than me.
