Against a dismal backdrop we walked and talked and tried to understand how America elected a President Trump.

dismal

Jenny N told us of her journeys around the rural landscape of the North West and Midwest of America.  She and her husband are intrepid travellers who made an 11 week tour that avoided cities such as Seattle and Los Angeles and Las Vegas whilst managing to visit national parks and small towns.  They saw “trailer parks” in every place they stopped and launderettes catering for the very many people who could not afford a washing machine.  These disenfranchised, low paid or unemployed people came out to vote yesterday – possibly for the first time.  The gap between these folk and the well paid metropolitan citizens of New York , Washington and other big cities is growing wider and wider – as if they live in two different countries.  Perhaps we should look around our own country and realize that more and more people are living on the margins, just keeping their heads above water and if we want to avoid a divided nation we will have to start thinking, talking and changing……now.

  1. What the poor people who voted for Trump don”t understand is that he will not do a blasted thing to help them. He is only out for the rich. This is an unmitigated disaster for the world. I am embarrassed to be an American.

  2. Really struggling to know what to say. I agree with TFMC and hope that it’s not too late to mend the situation. Not just for the disenfranchised people, but also for the future of the planet.

The late, great and very talented Douglas Adams said, “It is a well known fact, that those people who most want to rule people are, ipso facto, those least suited to do it. Anyone who is capable of getting themselves into a position of power should on no account be allowed to do the job.”

    Oh dear – Trump 1 World 0

That said, there are still a lot of good people in power in America who, I hope, will curb his excesses. Let’s also hope he can learn to keep his mouth shut in delicate situations and a way is found to keep him away from any big shiny dangerous weapons. 😦
