How a four and a half mile stroll turned into a nine mile hike

I decided it was time to see some more of this lovely county so, using a book bought for me by my old school friend Miriam, we set off in the car to drive to Old Warden.  The circular walk was scheduled to last a couple of hours  in the grounds of the Shuttleworth estate ……however, I chose the wrong day.  Roads were closed to traffic as it was the day of the Wings and Wheels air show at The Shuttleworth Airfield featuring vintage aircraft from 1909 to the 1950s. We parked in the village of Old Warden where the annual fair was in progress and then followed the map but back to front!.  Half way along, with biplanes flying low overhead, we came to a bridge where an officious security guard and a red bearded policeman in black leathers barred our way.  They recommended we retrace our path but Jeremy was sure we could pick up other open footpaths. They didn’t look pleased with us. Off we went with planes circling too close for my liking(at one point I was ready to throw myself into the hedge to escape a low flying craft).  Through nettles and field beans we finally made it to the main road at Caldecote ready to turn left towards Old Warden.  Another security man in a van told us that the road was blocked and we would be turned back by more police on motorbikes.  So on we went in a large loop and finally arrived back at Old Warden with a glow in our cheeks and slightly sore feet.  A great afternoon if not quite the gentle stroll I had planned – but we did manage to stay out of handcuffs!
