My Grandma Anne suffered with arthritis so my Grandpa did a lot of the cooking at home, decorating apple pies with a leaf made of pastry and cutting cucumbers fine and dressing them with a vinegar and sugar mixture. My grandfather was an old fashioned “gentleman” who doffed his hat to any woman he knew and walked on the curb side of any woman with whom he walked, including me and my mother. He was softly spoken and I never heard him say a bad word about another person. Above all he loved and cared for my grandmother, with whom he worked and lived for most of his adult life. As I cut the cucumber and dressed it with a sugary vinegar solution ( adding something too exotic for Grandpa – chilli peppers) I thought of my wonderful grandparents who contributed so much to my upbringing and that of my brother.
