The plasterers are working high up on the scaffolding skimming the plasterboard that they have put in between the rafters and beams. Two days ago they realised that a chirping noise was coming from the highest point at one end of the gable. They had found a nest in the roof and the mother bird began to try to attack Andy by flying at his face and then she flew away. We telephoned the RSPB who directed us to the RSPCA and they spoke with us and instructed that it was illegal to move the nest. We didn’t want to disturb the birds we just wanted to know how best to deal with the situation. As it is late in the year for nestlings they thought the birds would probably fledge over the weekend and advised us to leave well alone and work around them. Elliot took a photograph of them this afternoon ( he saw four nestlings, mouths wide open) and he also took a video which you can request and I will email to you. It’s just a few seconds long. Let’s hope the birds will be well fed by mum over the next two days and will have flown by Monday.

Hope the parents come back – they probably will as the babies are large and shouting for food. I think my first brood of swallows are at about the same stage of development which is certainly late for a first brood. They normally have two or three broods in a year if they can, but presumably your pair will have to relocate to a quieter spot if they want to try again.
Have a good weekend
Kate
