Hunting for bluebells, deer in the woods and the smouldering fire

Heather, armed with her footpath map, led us across fields and through trees, brambles and nettles towards a bluebell wood not far from Colesden. At one point we thought we would have to return defeated by the thick undergrowth but we battled on through to open ground. The white mayflower is showing in all the hedges and we caught sight of two muntjac deer amongst the trees. We even found a pheasant raising pen although there were no chicks yet. We returned along Channels End where a long hose pipe ran by the edge of the road taking water from the nearby reservoir to damp down the still burning fire at the brickyard. The fire is under control but will be burning for some days and the acrid smoke blew over us as we made our way across the fields towards the church.
