Saving and reclaiming the footpaths

Over twenty years ago Heather Smith ( see below) and a dedicated band of fellow walkers and enthusiasts pored over local maps and decided to reclaim the footpaths that criss cross the village and surrounding fields.  They put up signposts, persuaded farmers to mark and mow the paths and now we are able to take our weekly Wednesday walks on legally protected tracks without causing damage to crops or annoying the landowners.  We even had a new walker this week, Pat, who we hope will join us again.  His goal seems to be set on making his way to the renowned pub and restaurant, The Plough, at neighbouring Bolnhurst……which can be reached by footpaths, of course!

Thank you Heather.

  1. Well done Heather. It took me a year to get a public bridleway, which had been used for over a hundred years without let or hindrance, added to the Definitive Map and Schedule as a public right of way under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. These traditional routes in the countryside need to be kept open and maintained.
