The gardeners ” hungry gap” is when the vegetables from last year run out and before the new crops are ready. We still have baby pumpkins wrapped in newspaper in the summer house, half a bag of Pink Fir Apple potatoes ( the best salad potatoes ever) and another bag of purple skinned potatoes that are delicious roasted or mashed. And there is what I called my “winter larder” – the bed of leeks which is still half full of succulent stalks. The freezer is nearly empty of last year’s stewed fruit but I found some victoria plums which I have defrosted and, on the kitchen shelves, some jars of sun dried tomatoes which I added to the pasta salad which we will eat over the weekend. The parsnips, celeriac and most of the celery have been pulled from the soil outside and tonight we will have celery soup. The “hungry gap” should be April and May but ours will start in March……..when I will drive to the local farm shop for fresh vegetables. No shortage of eggs and now the Faverolles and the Silkies have started laying too.

Yum, yum….do you remember how to shop in a greengrocer!!??? Shabbat Shalom,
LOoks Yummy – Shabbat Shalom.
Now that Helen is thinking about giving up the Ambridge Organics Shop (under the influence of wicked nasty Rob – whom Pat and Shula know is a bad influence on Helen ) I think that there is a gap in the market and the Gables should take over, selling their home grown (organic) produce – don’t you???

Hello Gillian,
I am new to reading your blog and loving it, I was introduced by our son Rhys.
I was just calling in to recommend our local farm shop, in Sandy, at Girtford Bridge, the Bridge Farm Shop is excellent if you need another one to try, or perhaps this is the one you already use, there is always plenty of inspiration on the shelves, I always buy far too much!
Hope to be speaking more, Linda
