Calves, cows and bullocks

Our neighbour has a small herd of dexter cows.  They are a hardy, small breed who usually calve without intervention. Over the last three weeks the herd has produced four calves, three male and one female.  We went to view the latest two calves this afternoon.  They are adorable – as are their mothers.

Jeremy stroked the year old bullock who will go for slaughter sometime next year and produce tasty beef.  We are vegetarians!Image

    • Actually I have less issue about eating well raised, well fed and well cared for animals than eating factory farmed, mass produced cattle who produce unnaturally large quantities of milk and who are just a number in an agribusiness production line.
Well reared, antibiotic free animals, killed humanely ( is that a contradiction in terms?) and eaten with the knowledge of where and how they were produced may have a place in the wider scheme of life. The jury is out!
