A strange visitor, a length of rope and a happy ending

“Can you put on your boots and come outside….we have a visitor”!

We thought she was a puppy and we searched for her name tag but, although there were loops in the collar, the metal disc was missing.  She had wandered into our yard wagging her tail and without an owner in sight.  Jeremy got a long length of rope, a bowl of water and a chocolate biscuit and I telephoned a neighbour to see if she knew to whom the dog belonged.  She had an idea and set off to make a call.  Meanwhile the dog was wagging her tail and enjoying the stroking of her silky black fur.  I went to the back door to find my address book and call another neighbour.  At the end of the field behind the house I saw a pick up van and a man in a cap pacing the boundary.  I walked towards him waving and shouting “have you lost a dog?”.

When he finally heard me he called out “yes!” and I told him that she was tied up in our yard.  Jess is a three year old Labrador who, it seems, has lost her name tag and is drawn to any food and possibly smelled the vegetable soup aroma that was wafting out of my open kitchen door.  She was certainly happy to be reunited with her master, who lives by the school in the village.

Do come visit again but don’t forget to bring your phone number with you!
