A day for planting 7 trees – four plums, one greengage and two walnuts

Image

A day for planting an old greengage ( where do you see greengages anymore?) and also two zwetschen trees which my mother and joy and another friend said they could no longer find in the shops – and how these plums were the only ones for the pies that they used to make.  After careful research it seems that the word zwetschen is the German for “plums”!  We also planted two walnut trees on either side of the small gate that leads from our back garden and into the field and them directly to the huge oak tree that sits on the boundary between our field and the neighbouring field.  Jeremy is fond of quoting an old rhyme ” a wife, a dog and a walnut tree. The more you whip them the better they be” ….yeah right, I think not!

  1. Thanks Gill/Jeremy – great to read about the evolution of your farm and the fun you have

Some years ago I went to visit a friend in Salisbury who, like you, had a 5 acre field/tractor etc etc.
He had two walnut trees that no longer produced (wal)nuts

He spoke to his head gardener who, quoting your quip, “a wife, a dog and a walnut tree. The more you whip them the better they be”. asked for a hammer – which he then used to hammer the tree for some time around the trunk. Apparently he put a plank of wood between the hammer and tree to spread the pressure

The following year the walnuts returned with a vengeance!

Apparently the banging unblocks the sap lines

    Yitz
