Such a special morning – 80 years after VE Day

The u3a walking group traversed the fields and made a pilgrimage to Tempsford Airfield, Gibraltar Farm where the barn houses mementoes from the SOE (the special operation executive) where brave men and women set off during the Second World War to fly into occupied Europe – often sacrificing their young lives.

Violette Szabo (doesn’t she look like Ingrid Bergman? ) a French national whose life was lost (you can read about her in Anna Sebba’s wonderful book Les Parisiennes)
Russians and Poles, too, embarked on these dangerous missions. Many of them lost their lives

We owe them a debt of gratitude. The letter below was written by a local schoolchild on the 75th anniversary of VE Day

Food, flowers and silly ducks

Using some of the surplus cake matzo meal

And the plethora of rhubarb. I just had a slice with a cup of coffee. It’s good!

On the road side of the barn
Some roses are struggling through the clematis

As for the ducks, half of them found an escape route out of the run and were discovered in the courtyard. I herded them back with a broomstick but one is still AWOL
