How do bees keep warm in winter?

We could knit thousands of woollen bee suits but instead, this afternoon, we put on our thick cotton all in ones with hoods attached and…

Took some of last year’s fleeces
Piled them into a wheelbarrow
Took them across the field to the beehives

Lifted the lids, removed the rapid sugar feeders and lined the lids with soft, warm, Jacob wool

On went the lids and on top of that went plastic feed sacks to keep the woodpeckers away (they start drumming in February)

The woodpeckers can go peck on a tree and NOT on the wooden beehives. Sleep warm and tight little bees. Hope you survive the winter.

Although I mentioned many uses for wool in my book “Jews Milk Goats” (Amazon and other outlets) I didn’t talk about the way we use it here at The Gables to insulate beehives!
