Planning ahead

Our ewe, Domino, is one of the other sheep just about to lamb. Several years ago Domino had an udder infection leaving her with scar tissue and an inability to feed further lambs. Commercial farmers would have culled her but we didn’t and she has produced fine lambs year after year. We have to bottle feed them. She gave birth to twins in January and they did well on bottles. Now Domino is expecting again and Jeremy took some of the colostrum from Toffee’s lopsided udder this morning. I held Toffee and he milked the distended side into a jug. She has plenty left for her beautiful and big girl lamb.

The lamb is on its feet and sturdy

We have poured the colostrum (the rich first milk that contains extra nutrients for newborns) into two bottles and put those in the freezer. If, as we suspect, Domino gives birth to twins we will have rich colostrum to feed them on day one.
