We woke to the sight of two hares on the far side of the field, just to the right of the oak tree. Their huge sticky up ears and long limbs distinguish them from bunny rabbits which we see very often by the far fence. I grabbed a pair of binoculars and sat by the window to get a better view. Mr Hare then stood on his hind legs and, as if on cue, started boxing. I handed Jeremy the bins and he also watched this bizarre sight which is only seen in spring and is a mating ritual related to a build up of testosterone in the buck and a pushback by a harassed doe. Below is a YouTube video of said behaviour. I feel privileged to have seen this today.
Where do they find the energy to mate afterwards?!!!!! xx
