A string bag brings back memories from 40 years ago

The last butternut squash was stored in the onion barn. We brought it to the house to make it into soup. It’s so enormous that I have only used a third of the squash so far.

Jeremy noticed that the bag in which we had hung the butternut squash came from a farm in Devon, very close to where we lived on a 2 acre small holding over forty years ago.

We lived three miles from the town of Crediton in a hamlet of four houses called Stoneshill
This was our cottage, The old forge – and it had a thatched roof
It was very hilly and we kept some Jacob sheep of the four horned variety (our sheep at The Gables are two horned animals)
I spent winter evenings spinning the Jacob fleeces and then knitting jumpers and cardigans for J and me and our baby son
New son under the ornamental cherry tree in our Devon garden
We also owned two goats, Penelope and Prudence, and we milked them twice a day and sold the milk to local folk who came to buy from our door
Our cat, Muffin, was in charge of the dog and kept her (and us) in line. She would accompany us on walks and she was definitely not a lap cat (unlike Mabel). I respected her and also adored her.

A string bag brought back many happy memories.

  1. While you were spinning, I took the opportunity, next door at Bramblings, to learn how to make Honiton lace. I continued when I moved to Spain but I have to say my total output would only cover about an A4 sheet! It took a 1000 Honiton lacemakers to weave Queen Victoria’s wedding dress!

  2. Lovely memories Gill. Is that Peggy sitting by you and baby Seth?

Gosh doesn’t Lucy look like you did then. More than Rosa or Seth.

    Love to you
