Handing over eggs from a “social distance”.

A friend in a nearby village emailed me late last night. She keeps hens but NOT cockerels. One of her hens has gone broody so she wondered if we had a few fertile eggs to give her to place under Mrs Broody. We had a box of five Silkie eggs to which we added one Bantie egg. She will put them under the broody and, if all goes to plan, they should hatch in 21 days. Here’s hoping

Sam waited on the far side of the gate. I put the box of eggs on the ground and withdrew. She picked them up and drove home. She hasn’t used her car in four weeks and it was difficult to start! Strange days indeed

  1. I have an American friend who is keeping me supplied with eggs from her hens. I described the little drama of social distancing as similar to the exchange of political prisoners in the Cold War. Fans of John Le Carré will understand.
