A “shaggy goat” story – I “kid” you not

Last November, after months of searching, Jeremy tracked down two Golden Guernsey Nanny kids for sale in Lincolnshire. He agreed a price and a collection date. The day before we were to set off on our journey the owner called with some news. She felt obliged to let us know that her Billy goat had managed to jump into the pen with the nanny kids and might have mated with the older of the two. It only takes a moment and it took them several moments to remove said boisterous billy from the object of his attentions. Nevertheless we decided to fetch the girls , Willow and Wisp, from the charming older couple and they helped us load the kids into the back of our ancient, ex army Defender. It was a long, bone rattling journey home but the goats settled well in their new barn in the paddock and quickly became an integral part of the menagerie. Come January I noticed that Willow was developing a comely udder and by February we began counting down the weeks. Today Willow is exhibiting all the signs of an impending delivery and her udder has grown to twice its previous size

Darling Willow

She will struggle to deliver as she is only young and received wisdom advises that goats be at least one year old before they are mated. We will be on hand with hot water and towels or rubber gloves and a rope. Good luck little lady – please call if you need us and don’t wait until bedtime. Perhaps today is the day or maybe tomorrow. We shall see
