Vaporwave and Future Funk aficionado tries to explain to me how 80’s dance music is being redefined and reinterpreted by the millennials – and a little slice of Chairman Mao memorabilia arrives at The Gables

It was an interesting afternoon with talk ranging from Bernie Sanders, Trump and gun control to the new record label that one of our visitors has just set up in Oklahoma City…………CORASPECT RECORDS. Check it out. I am still trying to understand what sort of music this is but I am going to listen and see if it moves me. Nigel made a new friend.

And a box from mainland China was opened after we ate our pizzas. It contained a red army arm band and also a Chairman Mao mango badge. It’s a long story (something to do with the rift between the red army and the workers and peasant brigade) but our dear friend from Grantham has, probably, the most extensive collection of Mao badges and memorabilia in the UK as well as the knowledge of their history. All fascinating stuff and a welcome break from cooking in the barn kitchen!

  1. For the historically minded, it was a Red Guard armband -“Defending Mao Zedong Thought Blazing Inferno Combat Team”.
Mao regifted the mangoes to the Workers’ and Peasants’ Propaganda Team that had been sent into Qinghua University to put a stop to the open warfare between competing Red Guard factions.
