Well, it might have been better if I had immediately tackled the infestation of clover that threatened to swamp all the lentil plants. The experiment was organised by the charity, Garden Organics, and those of us who took part planted three 1 metre rows of two different varieties of lentils. We planted twice. 6 rows in March and 6 rows in April. We had to note the date of the emergence of the plants, the date of flowering, the date when the pods formed and finally ( as the plants die off and the pods dry) we have to harvest them and make some specific calculations.

Today I harvested the middle row of the first three rows and then extracted the lentils from the pods. After that I separated the chaff and tiny stones and this is what I extracted.

So, yes, one can grow lentils in England but it is a fiddly process to harvest and I have spent the past hour and a half finding enough lentils for a spoonful of dhal!
