Quails cannot be kept outdoors as they run away – and they run fast and don’t come back. Rabbit hutches are suggested as housing but I hate the idea of caged birds so we turned half of the large hay barn into a playground for birds replete with straw bales and logs and twigs and feeders. At night, for warmth and safety, they have a chicken house that can be locked. The quail will stay inside their gilded cage even as adults but the three chicks may join the other flocks when they are fully grown.
