Instead of sitting in reception at Wilson’s garage, waiting for my leaky tyre to be repaired, I took my daily constitutional in Eaton Socon. Just off the main thoroughfare I found a wealth of hidden treasures and even objects on the ground. First was a small gatehouse erected in 1828 for”malefactors”!

Then I wandered into St Mary’s Church where a lovely old gentleman gave me a tour of the building. Little remains of the medieval Church which burnt to the ground in 1931 and was rebuilt and rededicated less than two years later. The fire explains the absence of stained glass windows.

I then took my guide outside to show him what I had found on the ground next to a side entrance of the Church. A St Neots painted stone.

I had hoped to find one of these objects since the librarian told me about this recent craze for painting stones and leaving them anonymously, and randomly, around the town. What a delightful idea. Thank you whoever you are.
