Where have all the goldfish gone?

We inherited 12 goldfish when we moved to The Gables. Our predecessor forgot to tell us that he had left them and we only discovered them when we went to empty the water trough. Jeremy dug them a pond, lined it and planted marginal greenery around the edges.

We expected small fry but the numbers remained static. We fed them, they were active in the warmer months and less visible in the winter. All was well in the world of goldfish. Then, three days ago, Jeremy went to feed the fish and found one of them dead on the grass some way outside the fence. He picked it up and it’s tail began to move so he place it back into the pond and it swam away. He looked more closely and all he could see were two orange fish, no sign of the whites or any of the others. We have checked the pond each day and there are only two remaining. So who is responsible?

  1. Sorry to hear this, but the most likely culprit will be a Heron, but I have seen a Kingfisher make a dive into our pond and grab a large goldfish, then drop it because it was too big to swallow, so the mystery remains!! πŸ™‚
