In the darkness of winter, when one would imagine that nature is sleeping, a tiny miracle took place in a seed tray on the kitchen windowsill. The red asparagus pods that I placed in single cell pots in field collected mole earth have lain dormant for several weeks. I gave up hope some time ago but still continued to water the tray. This morning tiny asparagus shoots are visible and I have begun to understand that gardeners must develop tremendous patience and faith.

To all friends who celebrate at Christmas, I wish you joy and light and wonder wherever you are and with whomsoever you will feast and share your special day.
