Delivering fireworks and a chance to visit the hens

Our friends and neighbours host a firework party every year and each family contributes fireworks to make the evening go with “a bang”. I popped over with my rockets and Roman candles an hour ago and I was able to visit the chicks that we had rehomed with their one remaining hen. How they have grown and how pretty the Silkies are with their Pom Pom hairdos. The black hen is more colourful than when she was small but is, apparently, a bit of a bully. Two of the Silkies sleep cuddled up together in one nest box and sometimes the other Silk sleeps with the “raven”. Lovely to see them in their spacious and happy home.

Back in the veg garden it’s the perfect day to weed as the recent rain has loosened the soil and the couch grass. The nettles still have some stinging power but they must be pulled up however much it hurts! The outdoor Cape Gooseberries (physalis)are finally ripening and few make it indoors as I can’t resist eating them.
