Notes from the Horn of Africa where vegan food is a way of life

Daughter is in Addis Ababa for a conference on the future of peacekeeping.  Ethiopia is a deeply religious country where regular fasting is a way of life and on fast days vegan food can be eaten as an alternative to meat and dairy products, which must be avoided.  Think of the savings on animal suffering and greenhouse gases if we all adopted regular “vegan days”. Africa has much to teach us. Daughter visited the Holy Trinity Cathedral where Haile Selassie and his empress are buried.  Interestingly the suffragette Sylvia Pankhurst is also buried in the Carhedral (google her to see why she was living in Ethiopia with her son).

Daughter and her designated driver drove  past one of the largest street markets in East Africa, although she was advised not to walk amongst the crowds for fear of pickpockets.  I had my purse lifted in Oxford Street many moons ago and Jeremy had his taken at a football match in Rome some years back.  That’s city life all over the world it seems.

Thankfully we have what’s app and intermittent email to keep in touch with daughter and similarly with son in the consumer heaven (or hell)of Las Vegas where fasting is forbidden!  I will stick to sleepy old  Bedfordshire, thank you children, and look forward to the day when all the family are together again.  Stay safe and Chag Sameach.  Mum❤️
