After a day spent in the garden, autumn harvesting and clearing plants, I walked

Along the road to swop six Silkie eggs for a bag of field mushrooms.  My friend and neighbour, Kate, reliably informed me that the dead bird in the front garden was a moorhen.  Why was it so far from water?  Mabel insists that she did not kill her.  I don’t know whether I believe her.
