Goodness in the garden but also a sad event in the chicken run

We planted out baby leeks, thin as grass, but soon they will root and thicken and provide us with an alternative to onions during the winter.

The pumpkins, courgettes and tromboncinos are producing endless squashes and glowing yellow flowers.

But one of the Silkie chicks flexed its wing muscles today when I was in London seeing mum and collecting grandson.  When grandson and I went to see the birds, on our return, we saw the Silkie chick dead, drowned in a bucket of water.  He must have flown up and perched on the edge of the container and fallen in.  Helpless and unable to fly with wet wings he drowned.

Grandson and Jeremy will bury him in the vineyard tomorrow.  Poor little chick.
